In the midst of a strict sanitary confinement to stop the advance of the coronavirus, the Portuguese began to vote this Sunday to elect a president in an election in which the outgoing president, the moderate conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is the favorite.
The polling stations opened at 08 H 00 (local and GMT) on the mainland and on the island of Madeira.
The result will be known after the closing of the polling stations in the Azores archipelago at 20 H 00 GMT.
All polls anticipate a re-election of the current head of state in the first round, so the question lies in whether the extreme right candidate, André Ventura, will be able to surprise and arrive in second position, ahead of the former socialist deputy Ana Gomes.
Another of the unknowns is the participation rate of the 10, 8 million voters registered for this election in a country plunged for ten days in a second general lockdown to curb the explosion of covid cases – 19.
