The Barbados National Senior Games are in full swing this weekend, showcasing the dedication and athletic spirit of competitors over 40 years old. Field events kicked off the festivities at the Harrison College playing field, with the Discus and Javelin throwing competitions drawing a vibrant crowd.

Among the athletes defying the odds was Kathy Harper-Hall, the oldest competitor at a remarkable 86 years old. Her presence served as an inspiration to all, highlighting the ageless nature of athletic passion.

The women’s competition witnessed impressive throws across various age groups. Shelia Martindale secured victory in the 85-89 years Division, while Alvina Thomas dominated the 75-79 category with a commanding throw of 17.52 metres. Isalene Husbands finished a distant second with 10.43 metres.

Esther Griffith reigned supreme in the 65-69 age group with a throw of 15.43 metres. Janita Austin competed alone in the 70-74 category. Nevertheless, she delivered a noteworthy performance with a throw of 21.65 metres.

Shelia Martindale secured victory in the 85-89 years Division.

Tamen, the longest throw of the day on the women’s side belonged to Angela Jackson in the 60-64 category. Jackson unleashed a powerful throw of 23.35 metres to secure the top spot in her division.

The younger age groups also displayed impressive results. Sandra Small triumphed in the 40-44 category with a throw of 18.82 metres, followed by Mariama Eastmond (17.94m) and Camille Ashby (15.06m). Celia Collymore emerged victorious in the 45-49 age group with a throw of 19.94 metres, while Kim Massiah (15.71m) and Shelly-Ann Sandiford (11.76m) rounded out the podium.

The men’s Discus competition saw equally impressive performances. Brent Blackett clinched the 55-59 category with a throw of 35.04 metres, leaving Mark Anthony Carter in second place with 17.21 metres.

Tregonne Archibald dominated the 50-54 category with a throw of 32.22 metres. Courtland Holder secured victory in the 60-64 age group, surpassing Eon Mitchell’s throw of 20.37 metres.

The spirit of competition continued in the older age groups. Rickson Leacock emerged victorious in the 65-69 category with a throw of 24.47 metres, while Rodney Husbands secured the top spot in the 70-74 group with a throw of 24.0 metres.

The 40-49 age group also witnessed strong performances. Ron Kennedy secured the win in the 40-44 category with a throw of 31.08 metres, followed by Maurice Brathwaite’s victory in the 45-49 group with a throw of 30.58 metres.

The Barbados National Senior Games continue to be a testament to the enduring spirit of athleticism. These competitors over 40 are defying age limitations and inspiring others to embrace a healthy and active lifestyle.
