Scores of Barbados Labour Party (BLP) supporters converged on Barclays Park on the East Coast Road on Monday to celebrate the 86th anniversary of the Rt Excellent Sir Grantley Adams — one of the party’s founding fathers.

Addressing the crowd, Prime Minister Mia Mottley encouraged the party faithful gathered for the annual picnic and fun day to keep pressing ahead.

“We, as a party, after 86 years, are committed to making Barbados the best place it can be, but it can only happen when we do so together as one people from one family. Not every day is as bright and sunny as this; we know what it is to have showers, scattered showers and heavy showers. We also know that in spite of the showers, that we prepare for it and come back and build again.

“This is a season of planting and building for our country; it is not the time to reap as we would like yet, but as we plant, as we build, as we create opportunities for people, then you would be able to reap from them,” she said.

Mottley, who was joined on stage by the Grammy-winning Jamaican reggae band Morgan Heritage, also urged supporters to follow in the footsteps of the National Heroes and strive for excellence in everything they do.

“The message that I want to do, is to the family of the Labour Party . . . you will get out what you put in. When you work for something, you will get back your reward; that is a simple message because that was the example of so many of our heroes. The other example of Rihanna and Sir Garfield Sobers, who are our two living heroes, is that there must be a commitment to excellence.”

She added: “I want this party to remember that we are on a journey, and that journey requires us to plant, that journey requires us to see people, feel people, and hear people, [and] the journey requires us to be committed to excellence.” shamarblunt@barbadostoday.bb
