Young Barbadians are being urged to be curious about the constantly evolving technological world in which they live.

The advice came from principal of the Barbados Community College (BCC) Annette Alleyne as she addressed attendees of the college’s Division of Science Expo on Thursday.

The expo was first launched in 2013 by the Biology Department as a platform for students to showcase the practical aspects of their syllabus in a real world setting.

Giving brief remarks at the opening ceremony, Alleyne praised the students for their efforts and encouraged them, and visitors to the expo, to stay inquisitive about the modern world.

“Scientific knowledge changes, and you are the ones who are supposed to be innovative, to ask the questions and to implement whatever changes that come as result of all of the information that we are currently getting. Creativity, innovation, that comes from asking questions, from being curious, and from not just accepting the status quo,” the principal said.

“As you go through your social media feed, how many of you ask yourself ‘how does this work?’ Do you just use it or do you ask yourself ‘how is this working?’ How can I use this to become more self-sufficient…how do we become innovators [and] creators, rather than just users? That is the whole point of science.”
