อา brief work stoppage at the state-owned Barbados National Oil Company Ltd (BNOCL) on Thursday prompted a multi-prong agreement in which the workers are to receive long-awaited back pay next month.

The industrial action ended in the afternoon after management met with the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Deputy General Secretary Dwaine Paul disclosed that the bargaining agent had settled the back pay among a range of other issues that had angered the staff.

“The Barbados Workers’ Union today was able to reach an accord with management on several issues that had been extremely vexatious to the staff [which had resulted] in them withdrawing their labour today,” Paul disclosed. “Principal among them relates to the matter of outstanding back pay, which the company has now agreed to make every effort to have paid to the staff by the next pay day. Additionally, matters relating to some members of staff and their role in the company have been resolved, and the company is committed to making good on these confirmations by the 10th of next month.”

Paul reported that transport issues have also been resolved, and a plan has been put in place to address the issue of red circling – the practice of freezing the pay of employees who are paid more than colleagues doing the same work until their colleagues’ pay reaches the same level. Agreement was also reached on completing outstanding job evaluations and some health and safety concerns raised by the staff.

“All in all, the staff are very pleased with the outcome of today’s meeting, and we look forward to repairing and strengthening the relationships between management and staff as we seek to work assiduously to have these resolutions put in place for the betterment of all,” the senior BWU official said.

In a brief statement, the state oil company’s managers said both sides had agreed on a way forward to addressing the workers’ concerns.

“We are pleased to announce that following a productive meeting this afternoon, we have agreed on a way forward to addressing these matters,” it said.

“BNOCL is committed to working together with the Barbados Workers’ Union to ensure a positive and harmonious working relationship for all employees.” (EJ)
