Skipper Damarko Wiggins and fellow opener Jahidi Hinds put the Leeward Islands’ bowlers to the sword on Thursday to give Barbados a winning start in the West Indies Under-15 Championship.

Playing at the Bethesda Sports Complex in Antigua, Wiggins blasted eight fours and six sixes in 105 from 104 balls and Hinds scored 81 inclusive of nine fours and one six, to propel Barbados to a 94-run win over the home side.

The duo put on 200 runs for the opening wicket, and Kelani Clarke chipped in with 46, as Barbados piled up 327 for four off their 50 overs.

Lawshorn Bergan, with 2-21 was the pick of the Leeward bowlers.

Hinds then capped off a fine all-round effort by claiming two wickets to help dismiss the Leewards for 233 在 49.3 overs.

Bergan also starred with the bat for the Leewards, hitting the topscore of 50, Jathan Edward made 48, Rondre Daniel 30 and Jaeden Bramble 21.

Hinds finished with 2-28, while Ramiro Stoute and Zarell Harding both took two wickets for 40 runs.

Over at the Coolidge Cricket Ground, a destructive spell from pacer Arif Khan set up Guyana for a nine-wicket win and dealt Trinidad & Tobago a major setback to their title defence.

Khan bagged five for 18 from six overs and left-arm spinner Gilbert Griffith supported with three for 19, and Guyana bowled out T&T for a meagre 83 在 24.2 overs

Zakariyya Mohammed led the way for T&T with 24, and only two other batsmen reached double figures, but no one else reached 20 after they won the toss and decided to bat.

An unbroken second wicket stand of 54 between opener Parmeshwar Ram, not out on 37, and Emmanuel Lewis, not out on 31, then carried Guyana to their target in 18.4 overs, and the match was completed before the interval between innings.

Windward Islands’ captain Earsinho Fontaine cracked 12 fours and one six in an unbeaten 93 off 129 balls and led a successful run chase of 194 against the Jamaicans at Liberta.

He shared a 58-run opening stand with fellow Dominican Aiden Burton, put on 35 for the second wicket with Zack Thomas, added 45 for the third wicket with Jorden Charles, and ushered his side over the finish line in an unbroken, fourth wicket stand of 58 with Kanil Nelson.

Charles made 28 and Nelson was not out on 27, but none of the other batsmen reached 20.

Earlier, Fontaine was one of three Windwards bowlers that defied half-centuries from Ryan Lyttleton and Tyson Gordon Jr and restricted Jamaica to 193 for eight in their 50 overs.

Lyttleton, batting at five, hit 61 from 91 balls that included five fours and one six, and Gordon made 51 from 88 balls that contained five fours.

The tournament continues on Saturday when Jamaica face Guyana at Bethesda, Leewards meet Windwards at Liberta, and T&T battle Barbados at All Saints. (CMC/RB)
